I love this thread, and would like to thank all for the interesting posts in it, especially those who add some summary comment on why they are reading the book or on how good the book is.
I might mention that I read almost nothing that has been written since 1940, and mostly read Victorian literature. More or less every winter I read a Dickens around Xmas time and, for some lightweight reading, a few detective novels. In the same category of detective fiction as Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie's Miss Marples, are the Father Brown stories by G K Chesterton. Last week I picked up an omnibus volume of the complete collection in the little, second-hand bookshop in Bushmills for £1, and am enjoying working my way through it. Most entertaining, if you're into that sort of thing.
