Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a radio personality who dispenses advice to people who call in to her radio show. Recently, she said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22 and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following is an open letter to Dr. Laura penned by a east coast resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative: Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other specific laws and how to follow them: When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - - 24. The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself? A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here? Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? - -16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.
The letter is excellent, she believe it or not used to be a gay rights champion, after she converted to Orthodox Judasim she declared that she had been misinformed and angered the LGBT communities in the US.. she later aplogised for her words, only because she was due to air her new tv programme and the station was inundated with protests.
that is great duracel, never been so convinced
Very good, Duracel! ;) Of course the religious gay bashers will continue to tap-dance around the issue, claiming that the condemnation is universal but those laws were given to the Israeli theocracy only.
Boo....not wanting to start an arguement or anything (lol)...but isn't Leviticus the 3rd book of the Old Testament? (not bad for an atheist)....which would mean that Protestants and Catholics are also subject to these edicts. Strict Islamic law also contains many of the same things, whith remarkably similar punishments....maybe it's a conspiracy?????
Very good Andy (I actually had to go and check)!. We're also atheists and I spend a lot of my time (far too much probably) arguing with right-wing American Christians on the their blogs. I'm tempted to give you the URL to one in particular, but I think it would be unfair to set a whole bunch of swingers on him. This issue of the laws and punishments in Leviticus comes up quite a lot, and, in a nutshell, their argument is that God's condemnation of homosexuality is universal, but the punishments only applied to the Israeli theocracy that was set up once old Moses came down off the mountain. They claim that it's easy to tell which parts of the Bible are to be applied to everyone, and which aren't. :small-print: I call it tap-dancing. :taz: And when you ask them if they believe that the execution of homosexuals was ever morally right, at any time in history, you get an awful lot of squirming and waffling. Peace, Bull.
Okay heres my take , there are less than ten references to homosexuality in Lev, the whole Bible for that matter.. Now that leads me to believe that homosexuality is not an ethical sin, how can two consenting adults engaging in sex where no one is being hurt be sinful? Now if as we are told that God wrote the ten commandments as a guide to what he believed where our ethical and moral guides, why did he not include same sex relationships.
Using mental gymnastics, an olympic sport for fundamentalists, you can use the first commandment "no other gods" to cover just about everything you don't agree with. You just say that the same-sex relationship becomes an idol, or a false god. :fuckinghell:
Ah Bull...u indulge in one of my favourite pastimes, although I do prefer to do it in person coz I like to see them squirming lol. Personally I've always wondered where the Catholic penchant for shrines (particularly of Mary) fits in with the whole thing regarding false gods - I've asked a couple of priests and had nothing but obfuscation and avoidance in return...not really a shock, but a little disappointing, as I was looking forward to a good "discussion" lol. I'd be very interested in joiniing in ur fundamentalist-baiting exploits tho Bull.....and I know at least one other person who would enjoy it as well!!!
Lol Andy, I think I know who you're referring to: that great admirer of all things religious, the Tussey. By all means join in, we must have a chat about this soon.
Bull mate....check ur inbox, i left you and ur good woman a message.
